The most South Westerly point of Europe, which from time immemorial until the end of the pre-christian period,was a point of worship to the setting sun and its deities. Abundant remains of pre-historic obelisks in the region testify to the fact, that even during the pre-Roman era, the area was a point of worship.

Next to the Museum of Lagos, the Igreja de Santo António is one of the town’s most remarkable ex-libris. The building was probably erected during the reign of João V, but was reconstructed after the 1755 earthquake by the commander of Lagos Infantry Regiment. Installed in a building attached to the church of Santo António, The Lagos Museum was founded in 1934 on the initiative of its patron, Dr. José Formosinho. It has a Renaissance entrance door, which comes from the Church of the Maritime Compromise, and an iron door designed by local artists
